Does my child need to be strong already?
Ask the coach about the program’s entry expectations. Beginners can start by learning the movements and how practice works. Focus the conversation on willingness to learn and consistent participation, rather than comparing your child with experienced lifters.
What happens at a powerlifting meet?
Lifters compete in the squat, bench press and deadlift. Under SDHSPA rules, each lifter has three attempts per lift, and the best successful result in each contributes to the total. Athletes lift in groups called flights, so there is time between attempts.
How do we join and register?
Start with your school’s coach. Confirm eligibility, practice expectations, forms, deadlines and the registration process for each meet. Some events may handle registration through a team. This website’s results archive is not a registration system.
What equipment should we buy?
Get a specific checklist from the coach before purchasing anything. Competition clothing and equipment rules vary by organization. Ask what the team provides, what can be borrowed, and what must be approved for the meet. Read the rulebook linked below.
What should we ask about supervision?
Ask who leads training, how beginners learn technique, how loads are selected, and how spotting and warm-up areas are managed. Tell the coach about any participation restrictions provided by your child’s healthcare professional. A website guide cannot assess an individual athlete’s readiness.
Does my child have to change bodyweight to compete?
Do not assume that participating requires a bodyweight change. Ask the coach how competition categories are assigned and keep the discussion focused on learning and long-term participation. Questions about a child’s nutrition or health belong with a qualified healthcare professional.
How long should we plan to be there?
Use the meet director’s schedule, not a fixed estimate. Check-in and weigh-in may start before lifting, and the event length depends on the number of flights and platforms. Confirm arrival time, travel plans and whether athletes should stay through awards.
What should parents bring?
Bring the venue details, schedule, any tickets or admission payment requested, and what your family needs for the day. Help your athlete check their gear and food plan the night before. Confirm venue rules for food, chairs and spectators.
How can I help during the meet?
Agree on a simple plan with your athlete and coach. Offer encouragement, help with practical needs, and let the coach manage warm-ups and attempts. Stay out of restricted warm-up and platform areas unless invited by the event staff.
What if an attempt is unsuccessful?
An unsuccessful attempt is part of learning the sport. Let the athlete and coach review the referee decision and decide what to do next. Encourage a calm reset. Completing a lift also requires meeting the technical rules, not just moving the weight.
What counts as success at the first meet?
Useful goals include arriving prepared, following commands, completing successful attempts and learning the flow of competition. Ask your athlete what they are proud of before focusing on a placing or comparing totals.
How do the top-10 lists work?
The lists use available archived results, grouped by gender, weight class and lift. Each athlete/school identity contributes its best performance to a list. You can filter the season and competition group. These are archive rankings, not an official state record certification; missing or unclear data is identified on the rankings page.
Why is my child’s result missing or the school shown differently?
The site preserves the school/team and meet names supplied in the results. Some archives have missing fields, unclear names or unavailable files. Send the athlete’s name, meet, correct information and an official result file through the contact page so the source can be reviewed.
Who handles questions and concerns?
Ask the coach about training and team expectations; ask the meet director about venue procedures, eligibility and competition decisions. Use this website’s contact page for archive corrections and website questions.
How can our family support the website?
Use the donation button near the top of the page or share accurate official meet results with the website administrator. The support page will accept online donations once the payment link has been connected.
